This fabric is the first print design I ever produced with Christopher Farr Cloth. It is from a print work I had made years before, which looked at the simple action of overlap. One colour overlapping another to make a new colour. It is about that action. I used rectangles as the simplest form but also to use as building blocks to create composition, structure and balance. For this piece I have created a new composition from the existing print, in the tradition of joining found or scrap fabric pieces. The colours are laid side by side or one over another as you might be under a quilt. In a corner, there is a small area of a discontinued design called ‘Scaffold’ a design that was about support and holding up. I like the idea of this quilt representing a coming together.
Based in her London studio since 1986, Kate Blee is an artist and designer working in diverse media and materials, including wood, paper, clay and cloth. She has become renowned for her work's robust, domestic qualities and her passionate exploration of colour relationships. Blee's designs have been translated into rugs, tapestries, print, and wallpaper. They can be found in the public collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Crafts Council and the Contemporary Arts Society.
